IUL has two options for taking money out: a withdrawal or a loan. When taking a withdrawal first, we access the principal (or the value of premiums paid into the contract) and only after that can we access any of the gains. The gain withdrawals are taxable.
When taking money out via a loan, interest rates must be taken into consideration and weighed against the alternative method of withdrawing.
